UMBRO CELEBRATES SAINT PATRICK’S DAY WITH NEW 17-3 CAPSULE COLLECTION
Global sportwear brand Umbro celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day with the launch of a new 17-3 three-piece capsule collection and The Thread that Binds campaign. Building on the 17-3 football jerseys released for Saint Patrick’s Day in 2025, Umbro develops its longstanding relationship with Irish football and culture, both in Ireland and throughout the global diasporic community.
The campaign, entitled The Thread that Binds, celebrates the global Irish spirit, and the ways in which Irish culture shifts, migrates, and embraces change. Opening the campaign is African American dancer Morgan Bullock, whose Irish dancing in unexpected locations catapulted her to social media fame. Wearing the 17-3 Jersey on Venice Beach, Morgan embodies the spirit of modern Irish culture, celebrating a centuries-old Irish tradition in a powerful, contemporary context.
The second protagonist, Rejjie Snow, honours another Irish tradition, the limerick. Juxtaposed against the barren volcanic landscape of Iceland, Rejjie’s 17-3 Umbro Jersey references his Dublin upbringing and the reach of modern Irish culture today.
Another Dubliner, multi-disciplinary artist Sean Atmos completes the campaign trilogy. Atmos’ colour-blocked abstract handwriting reflects the energy of modern urban life and underlines the spirit of the 17-3 collection and its celebration of Irish heritage through three contemporary expressions of the nation’s culture.
The three piece 17-3 capsule collection features a football jersey, a track jacket and a new version of the Speciali trainer. The 17-3 jersey is fashioned from green jacquard, bearing an all-over tessellated design which combines the iconic Umbro logo with the classic Celtic Knot. Other nods to Ireland include the textured crest bearing Saint Patrick’s insignia, and the flat knit collar and sleeve cuffs which carry the colours of the Irish flag. The track jacket’s relaxed and boxy fit echoes Umbro’s 1990s design playbook and is emblazoned with the same motif and crest as the jersey. Completing the capsule collection is the 17-3Speciali trainer re-imagined in the collection’s signature green with a rich suede upper and sock liner carrying the jacquard print. Finished with a white and orange tab on the lateral side, the Speciali and wider collection bring Irish iconography to life in a contemporary design context.
“This collection is a love letter to the Irish community” said Helene Hope, Head of Global Brand Marketing at Umbro, “a community and culture with which Umbro has a long affinity. Using Umbro’s contemporary design language to weave together archival nods with Irish iconography has resulted in a capsule which looks to the future, whilst honouring the past.”
